Theragen Bio Signs “Genetic Big Data” Research Agreement with Sungkyunkwan University

2020-06-24 09:08

Theragen Bio signed a joint research agreement for genetic big data in forensic science with the Forensics Department of Sungkyunkwan University.

Under this agreement, they will jointly research genetic big data-based genetic genealogy, phenotyping, and DNA in trace and bad samples.

In addition, both will jointly conduct social activities and forensic science expert training programs including training for adolescents based on their capabilities in the forensic and life science fields.

Genetic genealogy research is conducted widely from “ancestry search,” for which direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing was recently approved, to the origins and mutations of microorganisms and viruses including plants, animals, and COVID-19.

Phenotyping uses DNA to identify an individual’s race, age, skin color, hair color, and eye color. The two institutions are planning to increase its accuracy by applying genetic big data to phenotyping.

The results of this research can be used to identify people and conduct forensic investigations such as identifying those missing for a long time including those who died at war, biological families of adoptees, and missing children, or suspects in unsolved cases.
